On the 13th of May 2019, we had the chance to present our research linked to charities and third sector agencies at a Charity Impact Showcase event at Bournemouth University (BU). The event was facilitated by Dr Fiona Cownie (FMC) and Professor Lee-Ann Fenge (HSS), who also shared their own research.
The Research Display Tables
The event featured a wide array of research display tables, each accompanied by research academics from different faculties, such as:
- Media and Communications (FMC)
- Science and Technology (SciTech)
- Management (FM)
- Health and Social Science (HSS)
Some of the examples of the research displayed were:
- Professor Edwin van Teijlingen (HSS) discussed his research in Nepal highlighting charities he has worked with
- Dr Anna Feigenbaum (FMC) showcased info-graphics and invited participants to engage with developed board-games
- Dr Joyce Costello (FMC) showcased her published book ‘Public Service Motivation and Civic Engagement’
We thought these were some excellent examples of research partnerships leading to real world impact.
Our Contribution
We are a team from the National Centre for Cross-Disciplinary Social Work (NCCDSW) at BU, and we went along to share the work we have done with Age UK and Burdett Trust for Nursing, among other charities. Our work focuses on raising awareness and understanding of the huge issue of financial scamming and fraud, especially among older and vulnerable people.
We also have a passion for finding and using diverse methods of knowledge creation and dissemination to engage with different audiences. For example, we used games and interactive activities to educate people about the risks and signs of financial scams.
Our Thanks and Hopes
The event was very well organised by Professor Lee-Ann Fenge, and we would like to thank her for inviting us along. We hope to be able to attend similar events in the future, and we would urge everyone else to attend should they have the opportunity. We were excited to meet a colleague for Sci-Tech, Jane Henriksen-Bulmer who had some exciting ideas, so watch this space!
We also hope that our research will make a positive difference for the people and organisations that we work with, and that we can contribute to the social good.
