Research themes and projects

The centre uses participatory and co-created methods to collaborate with the people they work with, and to apply their research to real-world problems and solutions. The centre also produces working papers, resources, and impact stories that showcase their research and its outcomes.

Some of the research themes and projects that the centre focuses on are:

• Marginalisation and Social Inclusion:

  This theme explores how to reduce social inequalities and promote the wellbeing and rights of people who are often marginalised or excluded from society, such as homeless people, substance users, transgender youth, LGBT+ communities, immigrants, and trafficking victims.

• Conflict, Identities and Transformation:
  

  This theme investigates how conflict affects people’s identities, relationships, and opportunities, and how to foster positive change and reconciliation in post-conflict settings. Some of the projects in this theme involve working with young people in Kosovo, Albania, Malaysia, Costa Rica, Nepal, and Rwanda, using music and other creative methods to empower them and prevent them from being exploited by organised crime or violent extremism.

• Social Work and Social Practice:

  This theme examines how social work and social care practice can be improved and informed by the voices and experiences of the people who use these services, such as children, older people, carers, and disabled people. Some of the projects in this theme include exploring how home care workers, carers, and volunteers supported people during the Covid-19 pandemic, how anabolic androgenic steroid users can be helped to overcome their addiction and health issues, and how physical activity levels of LGBT+ people can be increased by addressing the barriers and attitudes they face.
