Meet the team

Dr Margarete Parrish

My social work background goes back to my studies in the US.  My MSW is from the University of Georgia, where my concentration was in Mental Health. My PhD in Social Work is from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, where my thesis explored the bio-psychosocial effects of severe burn injuries.

My practice has been across mental and physical health settings, with particular emphasis on adaptation following trauma, and the role of substance misuse following trauma. I worked with young people in inner city Baltimore for some years, conducting assessments and follow-up with teenagers following intentional violence, mainly involving gun and knife crimes.

My teaching experience began with teaching on the MSW programme at Rutgers. I subsequently taught in the Medical School and the MSW programmes at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. In 2004 I began teaching on the Social Work degree programme at the University of Gloucestershire.

In 2013 I joined the Social Work teaching team at BU, where I have taught on the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programmes.  My primary areas of teaching have been in Psychosocial Perspectives, Mental Health, and Substance Use.  I enjoy supervising the MA Dissertation unit, which always serves to remind me of things I don’t know.
